Stack-to-Pot Ratio (SPR) Basics

Quick answer: SPR = effective stack ÷ pot, usually measured at the start of the flop before anyone bets. Effective stack means the smaller remaining stack between you and your opponent. Low SPR (about 1–3) means stacks are short relative to the pot, so one pair can often play for all the chips. High SPR (about 8–15+) means deep play: you usually want two pair or better—or a robust draw—to risk a stack.

If pot odds answer “what price am I getting?”, SPR answers “how big is the remaining risk compared with what’s already in the middle?”

Brush up on Texas Hold'em rules if you need the street structure; SPR is measured after the preflop action builds the pot.

The Formula, Step by Step

1. After preflop action, note the pot.
2. Note each player’s remaining chips (not the starting stack).
3. Take the minimum of those remaining stacks → effective stack.
4. Divide: SPR = effective stack / pot.

Upswing’s glossary states it the same way: shortest stack divided by the pot (Upswing, “What is SPR in Poker?”). GTO Wizard defines SPR as effective stack ÷ pot and treats it as a risk/reward gauge for how strong a hand must be to play for stacks (GTO Wizard blog, Andrew Brokos).

Label: Examples below are illustrative micro-stakes spots, not recorded hands from a specific session.

Limitations. SPR buckets are rough heuristics, not rules: ranges, position, board texture and rake all matter. In multiway pots, compute effective stack against each opponent; the commitment picture is usually governed by the smaller stacks still involved. SPR changes after every bet, so re-check it on later streets.

Worked Example 1: Single-Raised Pot, 100bb Deep

Example. $0.05/$0.10. Everyone starts with $10 (100 big blinds). Button opens to $0.30, big blind calls. Ignore rake for the pure math.

  • Pot ≈ $0.05 + $0.10 + $0.30 + $0.20 call = $0.65
  • Remaining stacks ≈ $9.70 each
  • SPR ≈ 9.70 / 0.65 ≈ 14.9

That is a high SPR. Top pair is strong, but shipping the whole stack on the flop with only one pair is usually a disaster. You have room for multiple bets; play smaller pots with medium-strength hands.

Worked Example 2: Same Stakes, Short Stack

Example. Same blinds. Villain is in the big blind and started the hand with $2.00; you cover. You open to $0.30 on the button, Villain calls $0.20 more.

  • Pot ≈ $0.65
  • Effective stack = $1.70 (Villain’s remainder)
  • SPR ≈ 1.70 / 0.65 ≈ 2.6

Now one pair / strong top pair spots are much closer to “stack-off” territory because there are only about two to three pots left behind. GTO Wizard’s SPR article shows the same idea: at SPR 1 an all-in needs ~33% equity to call; at SPR 2 ~40%; at SPR 3 ~43% if the rest goes in at once (Brokos / GTO Wizard).

Worked Example 3: 3-Bet Pot Lowers SPR

Example. $0.02/$0.05, 100bb ($5) stacks. Hijack opens $0.15, you 3-bet to $0.50 on the button, they call.

  • Pot ≈ $0.02 + $0.05 + $0.15 + $0.50 + $0.35 = $1.07
  • Remaining ≈ $4.50
  • SPR ≈ 4.50 / 1.07 ≈ 4.2

3-betting does two jobs: it builds fold equity preflop and it shrinks SPR so your strong one-pair hands are easier to play for value postflop. That is why deep-stacked players 3-bet big pairs and premium broadways more often as stacks grow (GTO Wizard discussion of preflop construction with SPR in mind).

Rule-of-Thumb Bands (Not Laws)

These bands appear across coaching literature (Upswing Lab excerpts summarized in Upswing’s SPR hands article; GTO Wizard solver snapshots). Treat them as orientation, not automatic jam/fold charts:

  • Under ~2.5: One pair / top pair often plays for stacks; draws may call off
  • ~2.5–7: Top pair needs kickers/board texture help; nut draws matter more
  • ~7+: Prefer two pair+, sets, or strong combo draws to build huge pots

Upswing’s rule of thumb: small SPR spots are where one-pair hands reign; bigger SPR situations call for two pair or better to play a large pot (Upswing, “Stack-to-Pot Ratio: 3 Hands…”).

SPR vs Pot Odds

  • SPR compares remaining stack to the current pot.
  • Pot odds compare this call to the final pot after calling.

A low SPR does not automatically mean good pot odds. You can still face a huge shove that prices you out. See pot odds and break-even calling math.

Micro-Stakes Application

At micros, many opponents open large or limp-call, which accidentally creates awkward SPRs. Before the flop ends:

1. Estimate the pot.
2. Glance at the shorter stack.
3. Bucket the SPR (low / medium / high).
4. Decide whether your hand wants a big pot or a small one.

If you flop top pair at SPR 13, default to controlled pot size. If you flop top pair at SPR 2, default to putting money in.

FAQ

When do I calculate SPR—flop only?
Most discussion uses the start of the flop. You can recompute on later streets after money goes in; the ratio falls as the pot grows.

Which stack if there are three players?
Effective stack is pairwise. Side pots complicate things; use the relevant shorter stack for the opponent you are mainly playing against.

Does a low SPR mean I must shove?
No. SPR measures depth, not hand strength. Board texture and range still matter (Tools of Poker / GTO literature caveats).
